Doors and Windows Guide
Your Quick Guide to Selecting and Configuring Doors and Windows
Choosing the perfect doors and windows for your space can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! This quick guide walks you through the essential considerations—from understanding different styles to taking accurate measurements—so you can make confident decisions and create a functional, beautiful environment.
Types of Windows
Side-Hung Windows: Side-hung windows, also known as casement windows, are windows that are hinged on the side and open outward like a door. They pivot on hinges attached to one side of the window frame. When opened, the window swings to the left or right, creating a large opening for ventilation. Side-hung windows are easy to operate, provide excellent airflow control, and can be tightly sealed when closed, offering good energy efficiency.
Top-Hung Windows: Top-hung windows are hinged at the top of the frame and open outward from the bottom. When you open a top-hung window, it tilts outward from the top, leaving a small gap at the bottom for ventilation. These windows are ideal for situations where you want to let fresh air in without fully opening the window or where exterior space might be limited. Top-hung windows are common in bathrooms and areas where privacy is a concern.
Bottom-Hung Windows: Bottom-hung windows are hinged at the bottom and open inward from the top. When you open a bottom-hung window, it tilts inward from the top, creating a small gap at the top for ventilation. These windows are less common than other types but can be useful in specific situations where you want to let air in without fully opening the window. They are also relatively easy to clean from the inside.
Tilt-and-Turn Windows: Tilt-and-turn windows offer a versatile design with two different opening options. They have multiple locking points around the frame for enhanced security. These windows can be opened in two ways:
Tilt Mode: In tilt mode, the window tilts inwards from the top, allowing for secure ventilation. This is useful when you want to let air in while keeping the window locked in a partially open position.
Turn Mode: In turn mode, the window can be fully opened by swinging it inward like a side-hung window. This provides maximum ventilation and easy access for cleaning the exterior glass.
Tilt-and-turn windows are popular in Europe and gaining popularity in other regions due to their functionality, energy efficiency, and ease of maintenance.
Each type of window has its own set of advantages and is suitable for different purposes and preferences.
Internal View
The internal view of a window or door refers to the perspective from the inside of a building or room looking towards the exterior. When you are standing inside a room and looking at a window or door, the view you have of the outside is called the internal view. It shows what you can see when you look out through the window or open the door and step outside. It represents the view from within the building, looking outward.
External View
The external view of a window or door, on the other hand, is the perspective from the outside of the building looking inwards. It shows what the window or door looks like from the perspective of someone standing outside the building and looking in. It represents the view from the exterior of the building, looking inside.
Both internal and external views of windows and doors are essential for different purposes. The internal view is crucial for understanding the impact of windows and doors on the interior design, lighting, and aesthetics of a room. The external view is essential for assessing the building’s overall appearance, curb appeal, and how the windows and doors fit into the architectural style.
When presenting models or visual representations of windows and doors, providing both internal and external views can help users fully appreciate the design and functionality of the products from different perspectives. This comprehensive approach allows customers to make well-informed decisions that suit their needs and preferences for both the interior and exterior aspects of their buildings.
Difference between Open in and Open Out
The terms “open in” and “open out” refer to the direction in which a door or window swings or opens when it is operated. This distinction is important because it can have practical implications for the functionality, aesthetics, and safety of the door or window in different settings. Let’s explore the differences between “open in” and “open out”:
Open In
When a door or window is described as “open in,” it means that the door or window swings or opens into the interior of the building or room. In other words, when you open the door or window, it moves inside the building or room, taking up some space within the interior.
Advantages of Open In:
Suitable for areas with limited exterior space: If the door or window opens into a small courtyard, patio, or balcony, an “open in” design ensures it won’t interfere with the outside space.
Enhanced security: Exterior doors that open inwards can be more secure since the hinges are on the inside, making them less accessible to potential intruders.
Considerations for Open In:
Furniture and decor placement: Ensure that there is enough space inside the room for the door or window to swing open without hitting furniture or decor.
Weather exposure: In regions with heavy rain or snow, an “open in” design might bring in water and debris if not adequately protected.
Open Out
For doors or windows labeled as “open out,” the swing is directed outward, away from the interior of the building or room. When opened, the door or window moves towards the exterior space.
Advantages of Open Out:
Weather protection: When it rains, an “open out” door or window helps prevent water from entering the building, making it suitable for areas with frequent rain or harsh weather conditions.
Maximizes interior space: Since the door or window swings outward, it doesn’t take up any interior space, allowing for more flexible furniture and decor arrangements.
Considerations for Open Out:
Exterior space availability: If the exterior space, such as a porch or balcony, is limited, an “open out” design may not be ideal as it could interfere with the outdoor area.
Security: Exterior doors that open outward may have exposed hinges, potentially making them more vulnerable to tampering. However, modern security measures can help mitigate this concern.
Ultimately, the choice between “open in” and “open out” depends on the specific requirements of the location, the design preferences, and any practical limitations. Whether it’s a door or a window, understanding the differences between these two options can help ensure that the chosen style fits well with the surrounding environment and offers the desired functionality.
Handle Location
Handle on the Left (Internal View): If the handle is on the left side of the window or door when you are looking at it from the inside of the room, it means the window or door will open by swinging or rotating towards the right side.
Handle on the Right (Internal View): Conversely, if the handle is on the right side from the internal view, it usually indicates that the window or door will open by swinging or rotating towards the left side.
It’s important to note that this convention may vary based on the design and manufacturer of the window or door. Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines or product documentation to confirm the specific operational directions of the window or door, especially if it is crucial for your installation or usage requirements. Understanding the direction of operation based on the handle’s position helps ensure that the window or door will fit well within the layout and accessibility needs of your living space or building.
